Glemsford History Research Summary - Daniel Scott (August 2026)
"For my piece on Glemsford's history ('The Tale of "Little Egypt": A History of Glemsford') i researched the entirity of the villages history (and the surrounding area in parts) from ~424, 000BC up until the present day. My research therefore has thus included the following areas of history: the earliest human inhabitants in the stour valley, the arrival of agriculture, the Celtic tribes which lived within and around Glemsford, the Roman Empire's presnce in Glemsford (and the revolt against the Romans). the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons, life in medieval Glemsford (410 AD - 1500 AD), life in Early Modern Glemsford (1500 AD - 1800 AD), and finally life in Modern Glemsford (1800 AD - Present). These periods include within them various topics such as: material culture (tools, pottery, coins, etc.) farming, the village's "founding", politics, the medieval manors, industry within the village, as well as various events which Glemsford has experienced. My research into Glemsford's history has been based on a multitude of sources but to name a few, it has been based on the Dedham Vale National Landscape's "Stour Valley Heritage Compendia"; Tithe records, newspapers, and directories from thegenealogist.co.uk; Archaeeological Excavation Reports; and finall, charters from the Bodleian Libraries.
